Questions
Epoxy Garage Floor Coating: Common Questions
Will an epoxy floor peel like my old garage floor paint did?
A prepared two-part system on a ground, moisture-tested slab is built to avoid the causes that peel floor paint. The old paint is ground off completely first, because a new coating is only as strong as whatever it is bonded to.
Can you coat right over the paint that is already on my garage floor?
No. Existing floor paint is removed by grinding down to sound concrete. Coating over it would tie the new floor to a film that is already letting go.
Do you acid etch the concrete?
Not as the main prep. Acid etching leaves only the smoothest of the ten concrete surface profiles, while a high-build epoxy wants a rougher one, so we diamond grind the slab.
What happens if my slab has a moisture problem?
The test result goes on your written scope, and a moisture control coat is added under the epoxy as its own priced line. Coating a wet slab without one is how blisters appear later.
When can I park on the new floor?
That depends on the system's product data sheet and the temperature in your garage, and the return-to-service time is written on your estimate. We do not guess at it on the phone.
Will the floor turn yellow in the sun?
Epoxy alone can chalk and yellow with UV and age. A polyaspartic or polyurethane topcoat is used where sun reaches the floor, which is most garages that sit open in the afternoon.
Will cracks in my slab show through the coating?
Cracks are cleaned out, filled and ground flush before the base coat, so most disappear under the flakes. A crack that is still moving in the slab can reappear, and we point those out at the walk.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. We look at the slab, note any old coatings and cracks, and give you a written estimate; the moisture test result is added to the scope before work begins.
